You need to choose the right product which is future proof and a well-proven in the market. If you are in the search for the Best Laptop for MATLAB, then your search may end after reading this post.
I’m not randomly saying that MATLAB doesn’t require very powerful hardware, the official site of the software itself has mentioned in this page. I’m going to follow the guidelines of that site and show you the best possible options. Previously, I have talked about some good laptops for computer science students and every laptop on that list too is compatible with MATLAB, you can check out that too If you want to explore more options.
Okay, Without taking too much of time, Let’s get started with out list of best laptops for MATLAB.
5 Best Laptops for MATLAB
If you are a person who is looking to get a premium machine for MATLAB, then there are many reasons to choose Apple’s MacBook Pro. Of course, it is an Apple product and it is expensive without any doubt, but If you have a high budget, then It would be silly to ignore this amazing laptop. On the other hand, If you have a limited budget, then I would definitely suggest you take a look at the other 4 laptops from this list as it might be perfect for your budget.
This is a late 2018 MacBook Pro that comes with a 13.3-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2560×1600. Along with the beautiful display, you are also going to get the Touch Bar feature which might not be very useful for many programmers but it could be surely useful.
Tip: There is also a non-touch bar model of this laptop, you can choose that if you don’t use Touch Bar frequently. You can find the model here.
As you may already know, the SSD will surely perform way faster than a traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and the 8GB RAM is going to help you perform multi-tasking easily.
When it comes to the processor (CPU), you’ll be getting a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 8th Gen Processor which does a really good job at the performance department. There is a significant improvement in multi-core from its previous model i.e 8826.
You’ll get a smooth butterfly keyboard and a large trackpad on this laptop which is quite impressive.
Finally, battery life. It can last for about 4 to 5 hours with heavy usage.
- A perfect premium laptop for MATLAB.
- Extremely lightweight.
- Great battery life.
- Might be expensive for some people.
- No USB 2.0 ports.
If you have the budget around $500-$600, then I must say that the Acer Aspire E15 is one of the top laptops for MATLAB in terms of value for money. Let’s discuss in detail to find out what exactly makes this laptop stand out from the rest.
The Acer Aspire E15 comes with a 15.6-inch IPS display which is not the best display in the market but for its pricing, it offers decent color accuracy and has good viewing angles in outdoor condition. The body of the laptop is made out of plastic and it is painted with an Aluminum surface. Again, I can rate 8/10 for this build quality considering its price. It isn’t the best but not the worst either in my opinion.
The default storage that comes with the laptop is 256GB SATA SSD which performs very well as usual but If you want more space to store more stuff, then there is an additional 2.5-inch empty slot to add an SSD or an HDD. The multitasking on this machine is top-notch with the help of 8GB DDR3 memory. Just like the storage, you have an option to upgrade the RAM up to 32GB which will make your machine perform way faster than you could think.
Acer has offered an Intel Core i5-8250U processor which has 4 core 8 threads. This processor comes with many mid-range laptops and it delivers excellent performance in any condition. You can increase the clock speed from the default 1.6Ghz to 3.4GHz with the help of Turbo Boost. It can run easily run MATLAB and similar programs without any issues at all.
One of the best things about this machine is that it comes with a dedicated graphics card i.e GeForce MX 150 with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM. If you are a gamer, then you can surely play some titles which doesn’t demand much power. You can see in the below chart how games perform on this machine.
Apart from playing games, You’ll be able to edit photos or videos much better than the above MacBook Pro which costs twice the price of this machine.
The laptop weighs 5.3 lbs (2.4 lbs) and personally I feel it is one of the cons of this laptop. It would be a little difficult to carry this laptop even in a laptop bag while traveling somewhere. If you don’t travel a lot, then there is nothing to worry about. The laptop comes with a Backlit keyboard which is very useful while using it late at night or in a dark place. You can read my post here If you are looking for more laptops with backlit keyboards.
The battery life of this laptop is surely one of the best on the market in my opinion. Though, Acer claims that it can last up to 15 hours but it isn’t a realistic estimation. You can get around 7-8 hours while using MATLAB and 10-12 hours while using it for entertainment purposes.

- Value for money.
- Decent performance for its price.
- Long lasting battery.
- Slightly heavy.
- Ordinary design.
This is again a mid-range laptop which is decent for office use, lightweight tasks and more. It costs similar to the above Acer Aspire E15. Let’s discuss what Dell has to offer for $550.
The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 comes with a 15.6-inch TrueLife Touchscreen display which isn’t as impressive as an IPS display but it is decent enough for media consumption and everyday usage. Most of the programmers don’t necessarily need a touchscreen laptop but it might handy sometimes which is a good thing.
The laptop comes with 12GB DDR4 2400MHz Memory which will allow you to run multiple programs at once with ease. The major disadvantage I see on this laptop is its slower 1TB 5400RPM HDD. Dell should have provided a 256GB SSD instead of this but again, considering its price, there is nothing much to complain about. The processor on this laptop is the same one from the above Acer Aspire i.e Intel Core i5-8250U which again, does a fantastic job.
This laptop also does comes with a backlit keyboard which is again a useful addition in my opinion. The Inspiron 15 5000 weighs 4.8 lbs (2.2) which is quite heavy in my opinion. The ports you’ll be getting on this machine are 2x USB 3.1, 1 x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, a headphone jack, and an SD card reader.
You can expect the battery to last around 3-4 hours which isn’t very impressive at all. It could have been better because you will be annoyed to charge your laptop 2 or 3 times in a single day.
- Smooth multitasking.
- Touchscreen might be useful for some people.
- Relatively heavy.
- Slower hard disk drive (HDD)
This is an entry level gaming laptop from HP which costs around $1200 and I must say this is a very good latop for MATLAB.
The HP Envy 17T comes with a beautiful 17.3-inch IPS display which is elegant and produces good color quality. The laptop is made out of aluminum most and surely it justifies its price.
When it comes to storage, you’ll be getting 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD which performs quite fast as usual and it is combined with 16GB DDR4 RAM. It might be a little expensive but it surely performs way faster compared to the Acer Aspire or Dell Inspiron. It won’t cause you any trouble while doing multi-tasking.
This HP Envy comes with Intel Core i7-8550U and it is the most powerful processor on this list. It has 4 cores and 8 threads. The base frequency of this CPU is 1.80 GHz and you can overclock it up to 4 GHz. It can easily run most of the heavy programs without any fuss.
For gaming, HP has offered GeForce MX150 with 4GB VRAM. It is double the speed of MX150 which is offered in Acer Aspire’s laptop. This isn’t the most perfect or powerful GPU on the market but it is surely going to be helpful while playing moderate demanding games or editing your family videos.
The laptop also comes with a 1-year subscription of MS Office 365 which is great. The laptop weighs about 6.6 lbs (3 kg) and it is the heaviest laptop on this list. Needless to say, it will be quite hard to travel with this laptop even for a shorter distance. You need to keep this in mind If you are planning to buy this one.
The battery can last up to 4-5 hours and you can get more by lowering the brightness level. Considering its price, I would expect a better battery life than this one.

- Gorgeous display.
- Extremely fast performance.
- Battery life should have been better.
The last laptop on this is Lenovo ThinkPad E580 which is budget or you can say an affordable laptop from Lenovo who are on a tight budget.
The laptop comes with a 15.6-inch display which is decent enough for a $600 laptop. I don’t have details about the build quality but you can expect it to have a decent build as has gained MIL-STD-810G military certification. Don’t expect a great build on this budget laptop.
The processor inside the machine is Intel Core i5-7200U which can easily run MATLAB or any other program without any headache. When it comes to storage and RAM, you have to first customize it and buy it later. Only 500GB HDD storage is free of charge and the rest of the customizations is paid for. Just select how much RAM and storage you want and add it to the cart. The laptop weighs 4.7 lbs (2.1kg) which is again slightly on the heavier side.
- Decent performance
- Affordable pricing.
As I said in the beginning that MATLAB doesn’t require much power to run, be it on a PC or on a laptop. In this post, I have tried to show you the best laptops for MATLAB which are durable and powerful too. I hope you may have found the right choice from this list. If you do, then I would love to hear about that in the comments below. Thanks.
